Circa 1960 - 1961 by Roger

Bemidji, Snelling, Bronson, Able..  one place missing..

The little white cabins on Laddie Lake disappeared sometime in the 70s I think.  Does anyone remember how long we lived there in '56 or have any memories from there?

The little white cabins remind me of places in the general vicinity.

I remember the hamburgers, malts and especially the big wooden booths at Laddie Lake Inn a few years later.  It closed up in the early 60s I think.

(I also remember buying one cent gumballs from the gumball machine at Big Ten grocery store in 1960. When I looked at my gumballs in the back seat of the '54 Olds as we turned onto Hwy 65, I briefly thought green was my favorite color.  Thought you otta know.)

----

One day, about 1960, Don and Kay were going somewhere in the '54 Olds and I wanted to go with. Don said no.  Audrey told me I should hide on the floorboard in the back while Don and Kay were still in the house, and so I lied down on my stomach on the floorboard.

As soon as Don and Kay got in the car and closed the doors, Don reached back behind him and felt of my back.  But he pretended to think that he had touched the floorboard, and he rewarded me for my effort by driving off with me aboard.

----

Audrey's triumph

About 1961, Don used to drive Audrey, Pam and I to Spring Lake, and then drive us home again.  The cloverleaf interchange had just been built at Hwy 65 and Hwy 10.  Don, ever the adventurer, liked to take 65 to 10, then loop back south to Spring Lake, and he liked to go back home the same way.

Audrey complained that he was taking the long way, and wanted him to take Osborne Road.  So Don said we'd do a timed test to see which way was quicker, and that we'd take the 65 & 10 route on the way to the lake and Osborne on the way back, and compare times.

Audrey protested, "Oh sure, you want to take Highway 65 on the way there instead of on the way back, because it takes five minutes to go around the cloverleaf !"

("five minutes" - exact quote.)

Well, Don went ahead with the test. I remember him counting the final seconds as we arrived at Spring Lake from the north. I also remember him counting the final seconds as we arrived home via the Osborne route. He proclaimed victory (by a narrow margin), but of course we all knew it was a cheesy victory.

Don relented right then (with a weak attempt at saving face).  He said, "We'll take Osborne both ways from now on, because it takes less gas."

----

Sleep walking sort of

In 1963, Pam was napping in Kay's corner bedroom, and she got up in her sleep and sleep crawled. Audrey witnessed it.  Pam was crawling around on her hands and knees at the foot of the bed, clucking.  She was saying, "Here Dickie Dickie Dickie!!" over and over.
