Running Of The Bull

On our visits to Bemidji I spent a lot of time with Harriet. One day when I was about nine years old Harriet and I went out in the field to bring in the cows for milking.  They of course also had a bull on their farm.  Before we could round up the cows the bull all of a sudden came at us in attack mode.  Harriet just yelled, "Run!!!"  It's probably the fastest Harriet and I ever ran and the fastest we ever crawled through the barbed wire fence.

The Tractor Ride

On another day cousin Jimmy was driving the tractor and drove up to the house.  I had never been on a tractor and asked Jimmy to give me a ride.  He just thought of me as an annoying little girl and wanted nothing to do with me and said no.  I begged him to please give me a ride to no avail.  Harriet was there and finally stepped in and told Jimmy to give me a ride.  So I crawled up onto the seat next to Jimmy and he immediately took off real fast and jerked the tractor left and right trying to throw me off. There was nothing to hang on to so I desperately held on to the edges of my seat.  I was pretty mad at Jimmy and Harriet was not too pleased with him either.  But I never asked for a tractor ride again.

The Rooster

In addition to my mean cousin and a mean bull, Clarence and Harriet had a mean rooster.  Don, Duane and I were a little afraid of this rooster, but that did not stop us from sometimes challenging it.  We would bravely walk toward him seeing how close we could get before he chased us off.  And when he challenged us, we quickly retreated.
