                           Tues., Sept 1st '42

My Dear Elsie,
I did not hear from you today, so I presume you have not found out as yet whether you can come home this weekend or not. Being as I did not see you Sunday, it seems like two weeks since I visited you instead of just last Wednesday.
I talked to Smoky tonite about learning his trade. He said that he would only be interested in teaching someone who would be free to take over his equipment when he goes into the army or navy. He asked me how much I was getting from Nash-Finch. I said $110.00, but that if I could start learning evenings, and if I found that I could make more in the vulcanizing shop while learning, I would be willing to quit my present job. He thinks I am wasting my time working for $110. I am to start work tomorrow after work about 5 o'clock or whenever I get there. He says that it won't be long before I would be able to make enough money evenings so that I would want to put in my full time there. I start by vulcanizing tubes then I go on to tires. So here goes, Darling, and maybe this is where our ship comes in. He has about 50 tires ahead of him all the time and he has been turning down several tires each day because he's swamped.
It sure has been a wet gloomy week so far. Tomatoes are awfully slow about ripening because of lack of sunshine.
Today I had no hard work. I counted stock all day. I have not seen nor heard from any of the folks today. But I should have went out and got my clothes tonite. Being that I was trying to make a deal with Smoky I just did not get time to go out there.
My, but I do hope that I hear from you tomorrow. Am anxious to find out when you are coming home. I'm lonesome. Don't know of anything else so I better get to bed. Hoping that you are still improving, I am

                    Your Love
                        Irvin
